L. A. DOBBS & HIS FAMILY
The Fort Payne Depot Museum is excited to announce the Lodwick Adams Dobbs Exhibit. The antique furniture, books, antique pictures and other artifacts which belonged to the L. A. Dobbs family were donated to the museum by Russ & Marilyn Gilbert. Russ & Marilyn Gilbert wanted the collection to come back to Fort Payne, Alabama and DeKalb County because L. A. Dobbs was a lawyer in the late 1800’s in Fort Payne, Alabama.
Lodwick Adams Dobbs, lawyer, was born September 4, 1842 at Lebanon, Alabama, in DeKalb County and died at Fort Payne, May 4, 1892. At the outbreak of the War of Secession he enlisted as a lieutenant in Co. A. Seventh Alabama cavalry regiment. He studied law and entered upon the practice of his profession at Lebanon, but when the court house was removed to Fort Payne in 1877 he made that place his home, until his death. He was counsel for the Alabama great southern railroad as long as he lived. He practiced law in Birmingham for a number of years. In 1876 he was elected as a Democrat to the State Senate, and served four years. L. A. Dobbs helped so many people with his law practice and was an outstanding servant to the public. He was a Democrat and a Methodist. He was married to Nancy Mariah Gibson and they had nine children. We are proud to be able to have on display his Civil War sword, lawyer’s desk, bookcases, books, family pictures, and other family artifacts. Please come by to see these fabulous collection of antiques and artifacts. |
